Worldwide it  is estimated that  40% of all foods require refrigeration, and 15%  of the electricity consumed around the globe is used for refrigeration. With the rising concern over climate change, global warming and the recent sharp increases in energy costs, there is increasing pressure to make significant reductions  in carbon emissions and energy use. Among all home appliances, refrigerators consume the most energy in the world accounting for around 30% of the total energy consumption. It makes up for the most household annual energy consumption especially in residential areas and 12% of the Greenhouse Gas Emission.
 

Now that  one person’s fridge consumes such a large amount of energy and produces so much waste, what if it is multiplied by community and domestic in the US, 100times, 1,000times, 100,000times?

Dorchester Scale

Among all home appliances, refrigerators consume the most energy in the world accounting for around 30% of the total energy consumption. It makes up for the most household annual energy consumption especially in residential areas and 12% of the Greenhouse Gas Emission. And we can tell the severity of the problem by looking at the density and mass of refrigerators in the domestic and regional maps in Dorchester.

Site Scale

Our proposal advocates the idea of collective responsibility and shared energy resources on a community scale. The idea of collective refrigeration works as a nexus, a mediator between individual and collective, the fixed and flexible, the domestic and infrastructural in community by taking advantage of seasonal temperature. We intend to utilize existing resources into urban assemblage to make the best use of temperature distribution for food refrigeration. 

We select the site because the biggest grocery market Stop and Shop located nearby, within this area, there are variety of refrigeration building type such as grocery, school, community block, restaurant, hotel, etc.
